FROM PAGE TO SCREEN - SANDRA SCIBERRAS

Join us for an evening of conversation with award-winning screenwriter, director and producer Sandra Sciberras and Geoffrey Williams, Founding Artistic Director of The Laneway Artspace and the St Kilda Writers Centre, followed by a Q&A. Throughout the evening, we will be screening selected scenes from Sandra’s films, and discussing the fascinating screenwriter’s process from the page to the screen.

Having started in the theatre, Sandra eventually wanted to write and direct for the screen. She graduated from VCA film school, before writing and directing her first indie film Deeper than Blue, which premiered at the 50th Sydney International Film Festival. The award-winning powerful drama The Caterpillar Wish was next, and the romantic comedy Surviving Georgia was her third screenplay to be produced. Through her company Three Feet of Film, The Green Door is her fourth directorial film, currently in post-production. Sandra has recently completed shooting in the desert of Western Australia on another Three Feet of Film feature, The Dust Walker.

Sandra is also audio archived for the Australian Film and Sound Archive as one of the selected screen directors to be interviewed every decade. She has presented internationally on the difficulties of writing cross-culturally and developing stories for East Timorese audiences, the ethical challenges for writers developing stories for the screen from non-fictional characters, the difficulties of mental health in youth from regional Australia.

In 2016, Sandra completed her Masters in Film and Television in Research with the topic ‘The challenges of multiple protagonist screenplays’. Sandra is now Head and Senior Lecturer of VCA Film and Television, Faculty of Fine Arts and Music, University of Melbourne.

Strictly limited capacity, and bookings are essential.

IF THESE WALLS COULD TALK…

First opened in 1965 by arty bohemians Mirka and Georges Mora, then taken on over the decades by the Massoni family, Iain Hewitson and the Grossi family, this eating and drinking institution is back with new life and ready to welcome guests all over again and begin a new history on Fitzroy Street.

Our Chef’s have created a neighborhood friendly menu that is seasonal and modern with a few St. Kilda quirks! The summer / autumn menu includes drool-worthy stuff like triple-cooked rare breed pork belly (with black pudding & pistachio crumble, fennel, orange and red vein sorrel), tangy ceviche (soaked in a zesty passionfruit and lemongrass sauce) and tender porterhouse steak served with chef’d up onion rings.

Reservations can be made on 03 9042 8573

We would love to welcome you to visit our iconic St. Kilda space……

‘I just wanted to say thank you so much for everything and that you have truly inspired me to go on further in what I truly love. It’s been eye opening for me, and you’ve made me believe I’m more than what I was.’ – Participant, Introduction to Creative Writing Class

We celebrate the launch of the inaugural St Kilda Writers Week by smashing through your fears, with a creative download – a Written and Spoken Word Jam Session – in a fully punctuation-free zone

This is a free event, but reservations are essential as capacity is strictly limited.

Using multiple elements of sung, spoken, written, printed, painted and photographed inspiration, we will crack the complex arcs of creative writing and storytelling to smash through your creative barriers of resistance, doubt, fear and self-consciousness.

In this class, we will harvest memories, fears, hopes and ambitions to collaborate on an epic survival of the fittest adventure that only an hour ago, had never existed.

This class is ideal for anyone – from novices to professionals – who uses words, dreams of using words, or who has always wondered what would happen if the creative floodgates opened!

Class requirements: Your voice and your imagination, a favourite book, an A4 spiral bound notebook, and a black, a red and a blue pen. Please leave your iPads, Tablets and Laptops at home.

Cost: Free. Bookings are essential, and no door sales are available.

Time: 7.30pm – 9.30pm. Classes begin promptly at 7.30pm.

What have some Creative Writing Class participants said?

‘The workshop made creativity easy.’

‘Geoffrey removed the blocks we set up for ourselves that stop us from doing what we want to do.’

‘It was great looking around the room full of people so happy to see themselves as writers, with new tools and perspectives, and lots of blocks removed.’

‘At first I felt as if I wasn’t taking anything in, but by the end of the second class, without even realising it, I’ve written an outline for a story. Just like that! I’m already starting to think about where this story can go.’

‘I’ve really enjoyed these classes and meeting other aspiring writers. I am looking forward to building more skills for my writing toolkit.’

Class Leader: Geoffrey Williams, Artistic Director, The Laneway Artspace

Geoffrey has written plays, screenplays, newspaper articles, film and theatre reviews, speeches, political campaigns, strategies, marketing material, media releases, and what feels like more than 250,000 emails. He has worked with award-winning filmmakers in script and story development, and has edited over 200 journals, reports, papers and abstracts for his Higher Education visual communication clients. Geoffrey was also the Film Writer for the West Australian Newspaper Group for six years, and is one of the Melbourne-based Theatre Reviewers for Stage Whispers magazine. He was the Editor and Journalist at Sydney’s The Pink Broad newspaper and homo magazine, and he also taught the creative writing stream to Marriage Celebrants training at South Yarra’s Modern Institute of Learning and Education.
